Do Almonds really sharpen the mind?

Do Almonds really sharpen the mind?

Do Almonds really sharpen the mind?

I remember when I was a kid and rushing to school. I would be at my doorstep when I would hear a scream from my mother; “Umang badam khao!” (Umang eat your almonds). There they were peeled and soaked overnight in water. I would swallow them hastily and rush off to school. It was a ritual, not one I liked, but one I would take part in to make my mom happy.  She always said, almonds make your mind sharper.

Now older and wiser, I have almonds regularly, as a snack, in between meals. They are low in calories, help me fill up my stomach and meet my fitness goals.  However, something stuck with me. Do almonds really make my mind sharper? I know this low carb, power packed snack is good for you. But how?

Here’s what I found out :

1) Your brain’s best friend

Almonds are like Bob the builder when it comes to your brain cell development which indirectly helps with your immunity system, overall brain health & memory function.
Packed with ACh acetylcholine, Zinc, Vitamin E, and Protein, these nuts help in brain cell development by boosting our immunity system. Almonds also promote the production of neurotransmitter chemicals that further improve communication between brain cells thereby improving our memory function and overall brain health.

You don’t need a lot of almonds to help improve memory; just soak about six to eight in water overnight and consume them the next day.

2) Nutrient Profiling: Model Nut!

Almonds are like model citizens when it comes to the nut world. They’ve got a fantastic nutrient record with each one of them positively impacting your health! Did you know one almond has only 7 calories?

Apart from being a low-calorie food that works wonders for our diet, Almonds are higher in fibre, calcium, vitamin E, and riboflavin than any other tree nut. They also provide a good amount of protein, magnesium, and potassi-yum.

3) They are literally Hair raising!

Losing a lot of hair? Scalp showing? Clogging up drains? Well, almonds are the solution to all your problems. That’s why most experts recommend almonds for hair growth. It makes your hair stronger, shinier & softer! Who’d have thought that one nut can change the way you look, feel (& eat in our case)!

Now let’s get our geek on and understand how it works : Omega 3 and Omega 6  fatty acids present in almonds promote blood flow which results in healthier looking hair. They may also promote frizz reduction. Now you know why Almond hair oils are so famous!

4) Good for your child. Great for the stress that comes with them!

Strange to think that there is no saying  ‘An almond a day keeps the doctor away’ because truly these supernuts are packed with antioxidants like Vitamin- E that work like a superpower helping you get rid of the LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or ‘bad cholesterol’, inflammation, ageing, and diseases like cancer.

To get the most of them, eat them unpeeled since that’s where all the antioxidants are largely concentrated.

5)
Don’t wrinkle, Eat Almonds

Akshay Kumar, massages his face with almond oil and hardly applies any make up, actress Anushka Sharma revealed in a popular TV show called  ‘Simi Selects India’s Most Desirable’. So, what makes Akshay Kumar include almonds in his skin care regime? Rich in Vitamin – E, these prized nuts are said to nourish and soften the skin when applied daily.

Introducing almonds in your diet will not only help you keep your skin clear and acne- free but will also act as an anti-ageing agent.
